SCB 101 Writing Assignment
You will be writing a research paper on one of the ‘features” found in your textbook and an additional scholarly
article. Each chapter of your textbook has four features: ”Technology Connection”, “Scientist Spotlight”, “Life
Application”, and “How do We Know?”. You cannot use the “Scientist Spotlight” as I want you to focus on an aspect of
research and not a specific person. The pages for each of the features is found on the first or second page of the chapter.
For your paper, select a feature that interests you to read in depth. Identify the topic/question/hypothesis of the feature.
Also identify the evidence given in support of the question. After you’ve chosen a feature you will research a scholarly
article that answers the same question or addresses the same hypothesis as the feature you chose.
Once you have chosen your feature and researched your article you will be writing an essay on your topic.
Scientific writing is a way of communicating the science or research that you did to anyone else who might be interested
in knowing more about it. It starts with a broad introduction of background information, narrows down to your specific
research question/hypothesis. Then provides evidence in support of, or in opposition of your hypothesis, followed by a
conclusion that generalizes your findings and relates them to other aspects of life.
