Context
In this subject you have examined the relationship between materials and storytelling, and through
experimentation and the perceptive nature of materials, how meaning can be intertwined. You have
explored the design process, built hands-on ideation skills, and developed an understanding of the
use of storytelling in design. This final task allows you to draw together the knowledge and skills that
you have developed to create and present and reflect on your completed module/sculpture.
ASSESSMENT 3 BRIEF | |
Subject Code and Title | DSO102 Design Studio 1 |
Assessment | Storytelling through material (Part B) |
Individual/Group | Individual |
Length | Audio-visual Presentation, 5-8-slides, supported with visual elements. Final work in progress and design process journal, 8-10-pages supported with visual elements. Reflective review (500 words +/- 10%) |
Learning Outcomes | This assessment addresses the following Subject Learning Outcomes: a) Apply construction skills to demonstrate creativity and develop conceptual ideas into a variety of 3- dimensional forms to solve a design problem. b) Apply specified design software skills to create a digital representation of 3-dimensional forms and deliver appropriate design outcomes. c) Demonstrate a capacity to research and follow a process of inquiry to inform a design response. d) Demonstrate creativity through a planned, imaginative and iterative process. Independently solve a design challenge and effectively communicate with different audiences and cultural groups. e) Distinguish social responsibilities through the ethical use of materials. |
Submission | For face to face classes, this assessment is to be presented in class in Module 12. For online classes, this assessment is due by 11:55pm AEST/AEDT Sunday end of Module 12 |

Remember that you may choose to design, for example, a product, a fashion garment, a fashion
embellishment, an interior space, an architectural form, an item of signage, branding collateral or
even an artistic exploration of the your own story.
Instructions
In Storytelling through material (Part A) you chose a story to inform your final model/sculpture;
created a collection of prototypes through workshops in materiality and design attributes; and chose
a material to use. In Assessment 3, you will build on this developmental work to realise your design;
build your sculpture; and present it with supporting documentation.
Realise your design; Build your sculpture
In order to refine your ideas, you will undertake workshops and peer evaluation exploring the
sustainability and ethical manufacturing considerations for your design.
You will then complete the design process by building your final designed sculpture. The process of
this stage will form the final part of your journal (8-10 pages) and should include a 500-word (+/-
10%) reflective review on the creative methods employed, as well as the sustainable and ethical
manufacturing considerations applied.
Once complete, you will need to photograph your model/sculpture, and then enhance the
photograph using appropriate software. Both the unedited and digitally enhanced versions of the
photograph will need to be included in the presentation.
Audio-Visual Presentation
Key aspects of the project will be presented through an audio recording (e.g. voiced over
PowerPoint or recorded on Adobe Acrobat) for online students, or an in class presentation in
Module 12 for face-to-face students.
Both on campus and online students will need to create 5-8 slides to speak to during their
presentation. The slides should adhere to the following structure:
Slide 1 | Unedited picture of sculpture (face to face students may also choose to physically present their sculpture) |
Slide 2 Digital representation of sculpture (enhanced using appropriate software)
Slide 3 | Mood board from Assessment 2 with any additional updates (elaborate on story behind piece) |
Slides 4 – 5 | Justification for the material selection based on sustainability and ethical manufacturing considerations |
Slides 6 – 8 Refection on the design process

Submission Instructions
Submit the following to Blackboard for assessment:
| A journal documenting design development including a reflective review on the creative methods, and sustainable and ethical manufacturing considerations applied. A slide presentation, live or recorded as detailed above, imparting the key aspects of the project |
|
Face to face classes will present their project in class in Module 12. Online classes will record an
audio clip to be uploaded with their assessment.
