culture is the main attribute

Week 5 Discussion

I selected two cultures – American and Australia. A culture is the main attribute, which can help to balance the diverse culture. It is important to focus on the behavior, manners, tone, and attitude of the children while carrying the message and speaking with them (Lustig & Koester, 2018). The American culture is open and well known. I believe in giving an open invitation discussion, at the same time the Australian culture is more European than American culture. Australian citizens are tolerant. Australia is among the most open-minded nations on Earth (Smith, 2018).

Challenges of adapting behaviors to another culture

The common language is English. However, I am fluent in ASL – American Sign Language. Deaf Australia is the national peak advocacy and information organization in Australia for Deaf people who are bilingual – using both English and Auslan – Australian Sign Language (Deaf Australia, 2013). They are aboriginal. The aboriginal definition is that belonging to a locality and native implies birth or origin in a place or region. Adapting the behaviors to the Australians culture is a challenge because of different sign language. Time difference between USA eastern time zone and Australia is 15 hours. Driving on left side of the road is opposite in our country. Australians use the metric system for distance and kilograms for weight. Australians eat the kangaroo meat that is a common meal.

The major of the culture conflict is that cause problem in any scenario, such as while greeting each other. The American citizens would believe in the handshake to greet, but the Australian citizens might NOT view the handshake as a friendly greeting. The Australians may view it as “homosexual.” Optimism is about the positive future of intercultural communication and with a renewed (re-establish) awareness of the need for a lifelong commitment (Lustig & Koester, 2018).

Analyze intercultural interactions

Australian Theatre of the Deaf aims to make a unique contribution to Australian culture by creating bi-lingual theater for the hearing and the deaf. It hopes to promote understanding and awareness of cultural difference and increase the audience for deaf cultural expression (The Interpreter’s friend, 2000). If I am applying for a job in Australia, I would be an American Sign Language instructor in a deaf community.

Intercultural competence in effective intercultural communication practice

Sometimes, intercultural contact does overcome the obstacles of cultural distances and positive attitudes between those who are involved do result (Lustig & Koester, 2018). The members of different cultures do not always lead to good feelings (Lustig & Koester, 2018).
