Reading log entry criteria
• The correct citation of the reference;
• The main thesis of the reference;
• What methodology and method was used and are the main findings of the work?;
• How you felt about what you have read in terms of accuracy, reliability and validity;
• Can the findings be generalized to the wider community?;
• Issues/assertions in the reading that you agree or disagree with and why you agree with it;;
• Why the material read is useful (or not).
The Task
Reading Logs: Pick two peer reviewed journal articles NOT currently on the course reading list – one of the articles must relate to either Topic 1
(Health Care Systems) and the other must relate to Topic 2 (The Health of Australians).
– a total of two articles.
– Published in the last 5 years
Using the provided template, write 300 words (but at least 200 words) on each of the reference materials selected. You may choose to write
these in a table (see course site for an example of a table) or you may write these in essay form again using the criteria as headings in the essay:
just make sure you cover the listed criteria.
Use peer
reviewed
journal articles
not books
In total you’re writing 2
reading log reports.
Peer Reviewed Items
▪ A scholarly (peer-reviewed) article has gone through a review process before publication. During this review process, the article
is evaluated (critiqued) by experts in the academic discipline. This type of journal is sometimes called a “refereed” journal.
▪ Here are some tips for identifying a peer-reviewed article:
▪ The journal title may include the word “Journal” or perhaps the word “Research.”
▪ The author’s academic credentials/affiliation will typically be listed at the beginning of the article.
▪ The article will typically include an abstract (summary) at the beginning of the article.
▪ The article will describe an original study (experiment) or will provide a literature review that evaluates research by other
scholars.
▪ The article’s list of cited references will be provided at the end of the article. This list is often labeled with the terms “References”
or “Works Cited.”
▪ The article is usually quite long. (Hint: If an article is only one or a few pages long, it’s probably not scholarly!)
▪ The library has a database called Ulrichsweb Global Serials Directory (Serials Solutions), which you can use to look up a journal
by its title and to gather some information about the publication, including whether or not the journal is refereed or peerreviewed.
▪ Please Note: Many of the library’s databases provide the option to limit your search to scholarly/peer-reviewed articles.
Although this limit option will limit the search results to articles published in scholarly/peer-reviewed journals, the results may
also include letters to the editor, editorials, and book reviews, all of which have not gone through a peer-review process.

Use SafeAssign – checking and upload
Please use the SafeAssign system to both check your draft
assignments and to finally upload your completed assignment
document.
For each assignment a DRAFT and FINAL portal has been
provided – but you get to the actual upload portal by
completing the Cover Sheet/Own Work declaration widget first
You can use the DRAFT portal several times to check several
drafts etc.

You can also use this second draft checking portal
In addition to SafeAssign draft portals provided in the course site you can also use the University-wide
“SafeAssign Draft Organisation site in L@G” – the portal for this site is found on the main ‘Assessment ‘
page on the course site.

Your SafeAssign Similarity or Originality Report
▪ When your draft assignments are processed through the DRAFT
SafeAssign system – SafeAssign will send back a similarity report or text
matching report. Further details on this report are found on the
‘Assessment’ page on the course site.
▪ Review this to ensure you have correctly paraphrased, cited and
referenced – if necessary make changes (and you can resubmit another
draft through the DRAFT portal).
▪ What is the % I should stay under??? – the overall % figure that the
report shows is an initial guide – what is critical is reviewing what was
matched and either recognising why it did that (e.g. it is highlighting the
title of a book you referenced) or if you dealt correctly with the matched
text reported (e.g. if you have quoted material from someone else’s work
that you have correctly and properly cited that reference).
